Utah Trip - Timp Hike

We had a wonderful visit to Utah a couple of weeks ago! One of the first things Brad and I did was hike Timp. Brad was unable to hike Timp a year ago due to work obligations, so that was one of the first things on our list when visiting Utah this summer. We arrived to Utah early morning on a Friday and met Matt and boys at 2:00 pm that Friday afternoon at the American Fork canyon Timpanookie Trailhead. It took us over 12 hours to hike to the summit and back, longer than last year because of all the snow making the hiking more difficult, and causing us to wander off the trail multiple times.
Luckily, Matt provided walking sticks for both Brad and I for this hike, and they were life-savers, literally! We would have fallen so many times without our sticks, and they definitely saved our hips and legs from being sore afterwards!
In addition to the snow, another thing that was much more present this year were mountain goats. In this pic Matt is pointing out a herd of mountain goats right in front of us!
Part of the herd Matt saw
A momma and her two babies scaling the side of some cliffs.
First views of the summit in the distance.
Brad trying to find the real trail without slipping to his death.
There's no way I could of hiked up these snow covered boulders without my walking sticks!
View of the summit behind us!
View of the meadow below mostly covered in snow.
Here you can see some wildflowers on the sunny side of the mountain.
Onward and upward to the saddle!
Taking a break on the saddle to re-hydrate and eat our packed sandwiches for dinner.
Also taking some nice pics of the valley below.
Views of Utah Lake & County
Views of the summit and last leg of our hike!
Time to get started on the sketchy trail a head of us.
Halfway between the saddle and the summit we ran into more mountain goats, which you can barely see in this pic because they blend in so well!
Here is another picture of them right above our heads!
Keeping our eyes on the goal...the little metal building at the summit!
Matt making his finish push to the top...
He made it!!
We all made it!!
Views from on top of the world! (at least that is what it felt like).
More views from on top!
Tyson took these pics of us...
and then one of himself!
Our goal last year was to make it to the saddle by sunset, which we did, but this year our goal was to make it to the summit by sunset, which we clearly did, but the sun was setting fast and Brad was anxious to get off the face before it was pitch black!
Views of the trail below us, and losing daylight fast!
Brad making his way down the loose rock with his hiking sticks. Matt and I regret leaving our hiking sticks on the saddle and not using them to summit! Half way between the summit and the saddle, the sun made its final decent behind the horizon!
Time to turn o our headlamps and hike the six plus hours down to the trailhead!
View of the sliver of a moon and valley lights!
By the time we made it back to the saddle and retrieved our walking sticks, it was completley dark, except for the bright valley lights! Unfortunately, we didn't have the valley lights nor the light of the moon for the long trek down, but we all made it safely, arriving at the trailhead parking lot about 3:00 am!
